Kentucky Insurance Requirements
Pre-Licensing Update:
Kentucky Department of Insurance Announcement
Effective January 6, 2012, Kentucky Administrative Regulation, 806 KAR 9:070, removes the limit for the number of times an applicant may retake an examination.
The insurance application remains valid for 120 days, and upon payment of an examination retake fee, the applicant may reschedule and complete an examination an unlimited number of times within the 120-day period.

Pre-Licensing Information:
- If a student is unlicensed and either has a business mailing address or home address in the state of Ohio then they can choose Ohio as their home state. If a student resides in Kentucky and has a business mailing address or home address in the state of Ohio then they can apply as a resident license in Ohio.

In order for a student to hold an active non-resident license in the state of Kentucky, the student must hold the same license class and lines of authority in their home state as a resident agent.
- “Home State” means the state or territory if the United States, in which an insurance agent maintains the insurance agent’s principal place of residence or principal place of business and is licensed to act as an insurance agent.

Continuing Education Hours
Twenty Four (24) CE credit hours are required biennially and may be completed via self-study or classroom and must include 3 hours of ethics.
Continuing Education Compliance Date
June 30th even numbered years for residents.
June 30th odd numbered years for non-residents.
License Renewal Date
March 31st odd numbered years for Life and Health
March 31st of even numbered years for Property & Casualty.
Type of courses accepted for CE Credit
Independent self study courses or classroom
Course Subject Requirements
At least 6 hours in one of the lines of authority for which agent is licensed. 2 hours of ethics must also be included and the remaining 16 hours may be taken in any Kentucky approved course.
Carryover Requirements
A maximum of 12 classroom hours may be carried over to the next reporting period.
Course Repetition
Courses may not be taken for credit more than once in a 2 year period.
Final Exam
Self-study final exams are not required to be monitored.
Exemptions
- Individuals with a limited line license for which an exam is not required.
- Individuals licensed less than a year at the time of compliance.
- Adjusters
- Solicitors with limited licenses
