Pennsylvania Insurance Continuing Education Requirements

Continuing Education Hours
Licensed insurance agents who are required to meet continuing education requirements must earn 24 hours every 2 year license term.

Who is required to meet continuing education requirements?
All insurance agents who hold a license in any of the major lines of insurance (property, casualty, personal lines P&C, life, and accident and health) as well as those licensed in the limited line of automobile.

Are any agents exempt from the requirements?
Insurance producers who were licensed prior to January 1, 1971, and have been continuously licensed without adding any other lines of authority. Public adjusters, Motor Vehicle damage appraisers, Surplus lines adjust or members, Reinsurance intermediary brokers or managers, exclusive general agents, and managers, the holder of a license whose only line of authority is a limited line, and a non-resident Insurance Producer (excludes Title Insurance Agents).

License Renewal Date
Existing Resident Insurance Producers must complete 24 hours of continuing education prior to the expiration date of their current license. The Pennsylvania Department of Insurance will send out CE letters 90 days and renewal letters 45 days to the current license expiration date.

Type of courses accepted for CE Credit
Independent self study courses or classroom.

Carryover Requirements
No. Carry-over of credits is not permitted.

Course Repetition
Credit will not be awarded for the exact same courses repeated in a single reporting period.

Final Exam
Students are required to pass a final, proctored examination in order to complete their self-study courses. They must be monitored by a disinterested 3rd party.
