What is Accreditation?

Accreditation is an indicator of educational quality.

Accrediting agencies are independent organizations that set standards for educational quality. An accredited institution or program continually demonstrates that it meets these standards. Additionally, institutions that are accredited by an agency recognized by the United States Department of Education are able to provide federal student financial aid (Title IV).

Questions regarding accreditation should be directed to Adam Bulizak, Vice President, Accreditation and Compliance. Questions regarding Title IV eligibility or administration should be directed to Dr. Gregory Guzmán, Vice President of Financial Aid Services and Government Relations.

Institutional Accreditation

Hondros College of Nursing is institutionally accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).  The Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools is recognized by the United States Department of Education.

There are two types of institutional accreditation: national accreditation, and regional accreditation. Institutions that are regionally accredited tend to emphasize academic research rather than specific student learning outcomes. Institutions that are nationally accredited tend to focus on student learning outcomes, like retention, licensure pass rates, and career placement. Nationally accredited institutions predominantly offer programs that prepare students to enter a specific career. ABHES is a health education-focused national accreditor, which aligns with Hondros College of Nursing’s mission to prepare students for future nursing careers.

National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements Approval

Hondros College of Nursing operates under the approval of the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements. State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (SARA) simplify the process for students to take an online course for credit offered by an institution located in another state. An up-to-date list of states participating in SARA can be found on the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements website.

Students with a concern or issue should first attempt to resolve it with the College, per the procedures published in the Student Catalog. Students located in SARA-participating states who feel that their concern was not adequately addressed by the institution may appeal to the SARA portal entity for Ohio, the Ohio Department of Higher Education, using the Department’s complaint website. Complaints related to grades or student conduct will not be considered, nor will complaints related to situations that occurred more than two years ago.
