I decided to pursue nursing at a young age, just wanting to help those who couldn’t help themselves. At the age of 16, I volunteered at a facility and, although I couldn’t do much physical activity in terms of patient care, just making them smile—by reading a book, painting a lady’s nails, or even just having a conversation—made me want to jump headfirst into the nursing field. The joy it brings me to know I have made a difference in someone’s life truly brings me a sense of fulfillment.

I decided to attend Hondros College of Nursing, first getting my LPN in Indianapolis because it the length of the program was just right for me. After being a CNA for 17 years, I felt it was time to pursue my career further. I didn’t want to drag out being in nursing school for a long period of time, and I felt Hondros College of Nursing was the route I would take. It worked out, and that’s what made me go back for my ADN!

To reach my goals, I first deleted all social media. That was a must because I was extremely serious about getting through school without any distractions. I then dedicated 6–7 hours a day to make sure I focused on schoolwork and studying. Between work, school, and being a mother, there was no time for anything else.

I am so proud of my accomplishments, and I am happy that I chose the path I did. It gets rough at times, but the good definitely outweighs the bad. And I love, love, love being a nurse!

The advice I would give to a future nursing student is to make sure you truly want to work in this field. Nursing is more than a paycheck—you must have compassion, empathy, and be prepared to be an advocate for your patients. You have to be a people person because you will meet individuals of all backgrounds and ages who look to you for help when they need it most.
